Day 3 - PA into Ohio

Day 3 - Sept 13, 2010

After having some breakfast I left Mark’s house around 9:30am. It was slightly overcast and 62F. Started the day with 204 miles on the odometer. Set my GPS heading to Pittsburgh, PA to try a famous Primanti Brothers sandwich.

It was a beautiful day for a drive. Bright blue sunny skies lined with pillows of cumulous clouds and rolling hill terrain for almost the entire trip to Pittsburgh. Passed through a system of three tunnels bored through the various mountains, not sure why I get somewhat of an anxious feeling while I’m in there, but I do.

I arrived at Primanti Brothers at 2:35pm. They have a list of about 10 varieties of sandwiches, each one is covered in cole slaw and finished with a layer of French fries, served in between two slices of thick white bread. I ordered the the corned beef and cheese sandwich and an iced tea. Why did I set out to Pittsburgh just for a Primanti Brothers sandwich? Well, because it was featured on the Travel Channel, Man vs. Food, where Adam Richman travels around to conquer some of the biggest and best foods. It was pretty tasty, but a little overrated in my opinion. I enjoyed it and it gave me the pick-me-up that I needed to keep on going.

Not far from the Primanti Brothers was a cable car system that brings you up to a series of platforms that overlook the city of Pittsburgh. I took the Monongahela Incline for a whopping $2.75 round trip fee.

The overlook had good views of what was once a dirty old steel town. Known as “The City of Bridges” Pittsburgh has 446 of them within it’s 55.5 square miles and is ranked the 13th largest city in the US. Elevation 1,223 feet. Stats from About.com and Wikipedia.

Apparently, Pittsburgh is quite a sports town. It seemed that almost 1 in 10 people were sporting some sort of Pirates, Penguins or Steelers jersey or displaying a decal on their car. Go Giants!

I didn’t stay too long in Pittsburgh. My next set destination is Minneapolis, MN so I let Ms. Garmin guide me in the right direction. I made it out of PA and into Ohio by following the PA Turnpike which turns into the Ohio Turnpike. By around 6:30, I decided to start looking for a place to camp for the night. Within a few clicks on my Droid X and the “Where” program, I had a surprisingly large list of campsites to choose from within 15 or so miles of where I was.

I stayed in the West Branch State Park, part of the Ohio State Park system. $21 allowed me a small spot to pitch my tent for the night. It was almost dark by the time I was set up and I was getting tired so I passed on making a fire. Instead I just boiled some water to make some ramen noodles. A .20 cent meal never tasted so good. Oatmeal cookies and beef jerky finished off this gourmet meal.

Went to sleep by 9pm and had one of the best nights rest in a long time.

Just over 500 miles so far.
